KCLB'S new night program heats up the desert
Palm Springs, CA - June xx, 2010 - From 7 p.m. to midnight, when most of Palm Springs is looking for the evening cool breeze and squeezing out that last bit of shade, Tyler Russell is at the valley's hard rock radio station, 93.7 KCLB, bringing a piece of Los Angeles' rock scene to desert listeners.
Tyler, 21, moved to Palm Springs June 1 from KIIS FM in L.A. to shake things up during the valley's normally calm radio nights, where tracked music and syndicated shows are the major fare. In a few short weeks, Tyler has excited his core listeners and attracted new listeners with his edgy style and interactive content.
During his second week, when one of his listeners challenged him to find Barbara Eden after saying he saw her in the local Home Depot, Tyler got on the phones, while on the air, and tracked down her agent, her publicist and eventually her husband, who told Tyler that she was actually "right here in Beverly Hills." The next week during the Lakers/Celtics playoff series, Tyler set off again to track down the most knowledgeable of L.A. basketball fans: the Laker Girls. After a number of humorous interactions with the Staples Center and the Dean of Chapman University (his former college), Tyler reached the agent of Laker Girl and actress Lindsay Dennis. Lindsay called Tyler back later in the show for an on-air interview.
Tyler also doesn't just give away tickets; he requires his listeners to participate in the show. In order to earn two tickets, Tyler assigned a willing caller to go through a drive-thru and pretend he was hard-of- hearing to prank the attendant, all live on the air.
One night, after meeting Adolfo, the station's night janitor, Tyler invited him to be his guest on-air. The two now do a bi-weekly segment, discussing music with a hilarious language barrier.
Will night radio in the desert ever be the same?
